Search gives you impressions, clicks, positions and a settled reporting lag. You can construct an experiment: change one thing, hold a comparable group still, compare over 28 days. That instrumentation is what makes an SEO claim checkable.
Answer engines give you a paragraph. There is no impression count, no click, no position, and the same question answered twice can produce two different paragraphs. Everything that makes search measurable has to be rebuilt, and pretending the old numbers transfer is where most of this category goes wrong.
What transfers, and what does not
- Transfers: the workBeing crawlable, being accurately described, being present in the places that describe your market. Ordinary practice, still ordinary.
- Transfers: the disciplineFixed question sets, stored evidence, denominators stated, results allowed to come back negative. If anything, it matters more here.
- Does not transfer: positionOrder of first mention in a paragraph is not a rank. Rendering the two in one unit is how you end up believing a mention moved you up a search results page.
- Does not transfer: the thresholdsEffect sizes and measurement windows derived for Search Console's daily aggregates do not describe a system that answers differently on a Tuesday. Reusing them produces confident nonsense.
This is why we publish AI visibility as a measurement and not yet as a verdict. The ledger issues verdicts because we know what search data's noise looks like. We do not yet know what an answer engine's own week-to-week variance looks like, and issuing verdicts before we do would be the exact mistake this page is about.
Should I budget for both?
Most of the underlying work is shared, so the honest answer is usually one programme with two measurements rather than two budgets. The measurement is what needs adding.
Which matters more right now?
It depends entirely on the market, which is why measuring first is the recommendation. In some categories the assistant answer is already how buyers shortlist; in others it barely registers.
