Every grounded answer is assembled from sources. Recording them turns a visibility measurement into something a content plan can act on: if the answers describing your market are built on three comparison sites and a forum thread, that is where the market's description of you is being written.
Citations are classified by kind rather than only by domain, because the useful distinction is between your own pages, third-party publishers and community discussion. Those imply completely different work.
What the kinds tell you
- Your own pagesThe engine is reading what you published and using it. This is the case where shipping a better page has the most direct path to changing what gets said.
- Third-party publishersReview sites, comparison directories, trade press. Your description is being written by somebody else, and the work is usually about being listed accurately rather than about your own site.
- Community threadsForums and discussion sites. Hardest to influence honestly, and the place where a stale complaint can outlive its fix by years.
- Cited but not recommendedAn answer citing your page while naming somebody else. Counted separately, and often the most fixable gap on the board.
One trap worth knowing about if you evaluate other tools: some engines return citation URLs that point at their own redirect service, with the real publisher only in the link's title. Classified on the URL alone, every citation becomes third-party forever and your own site can never be credited — a confident, uniform, wrong answer with no error anywhere.
Is a citation the same as a mention?
No. A mention is the brand being named in the prose; a citation is a source the answer drew on. An answer can do either without the other, and they are counted separately for that reason.
Do you count how many times a page is cited?
Yes, across the run, so a page that keeps turning up in answers about your market is visible as a pattern rather than as a one-off.
